NOT because of St. Patrick’s Day

This gallery contains 7 photos.

My mother once accidentally made a ham for Passover. Yeah, really… it was on sale because Passover and Easter were the same week. I’m making a corned beef today because it’s on sale. In fact the corned beef cost less … Continue reading

Better the second time around

Faro Pilaf and Chicken DinnerAll those lovely grilled veggies from Saturday night made an encore appearance for dinner tonight. I made a pot of faro pilaf and added the vegetables after it was finished. I had 5 good size mushrooms, a yellow zucchini and LOTS of grilled asparagus. There was even some leftover chicken to make it a meal. I am an unapologetic carnivore, but this could have easily been a vegetarian meal.

The last word on the f-ing olives…

So I went out and spent the afternoon with my brother to help him jar his and Inez’ olives from the December weekend in Paso Robles. I took lots more photos this time than I did when I was going … Continue reading

I feed more than people

This was a pretty perfect day! Started out with an hour of ballet or as I prefer to call it “moving my ass”. Picked up rose food, grass seed and citrus tree food then spent the rest of the day outside for the most part. These freesias bloomed better than any year I can remember and pretty soon Bowen Court will look like this:

I got so into feeding and watering in the food so the lawn maintenance guys don’t blow it away on Monday that I forgot all about lunch other than munching a little of the beet salad I made and some snacking at Whole Foods. While I was there at noon they cracked a fresh wheel of Parmesan. I hadn’t planned to be there but apparently they were after getting into the record books with the “Crack Heard Round the World“. The cheese was pretty sweet and yummy; that’s all I can say about that!

I finally fired up the grill for some chicken and veggies. I think I’ll put on my PJs and finish the glass of wine with a piece of dark chocolate and a movie.

Beet Salad

Southern California sure feels like spring. Other than a couple of pretty cold weeks in December I’m not sure it really felt like winter this year. Yesterday Samantha and I picked the last of the oranges so that the abundant flowers could get all the nutrients the tree could provide for another banner year. (Yes, Mary Pat I got her to do the dangerous work…) Then later in the afternoon Sharon, Marcia and I trimmed deadwood out of the Meyer Lemon.

So today I’m feeling like grilling (there are chicken thighs in the refrigerator with a citrus pepper dry rub on them); I’ll cook them along side some asparagus and yellow squash.

Oh, yes and I’ll serve the beet salad on butter lettuce. It was just too warm to heat up the oven (and the house) to roast them so this is my summer stovetop method. Beets are a bit messy but well worth it in my opinion.
